ab's logs on the net ...January 24 Plane crash in GIKIRecently a plan crashed in "Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute" aka GIKI. An email this guy, named Mobin Abbas, wrote that is floating around these days. I think I should share it with everyone. Some good words:
Today, there was an incident here that substantially changed my way of thinking. A Pakistan Airforce trainer plane crashed inside GIKI premises today. The pilot and a gardener died on the spot. There was no other loss of life or property. Further analysis (and some witness reports) revealed that the trainee pilot's quick thinking had prevented loss of 300+ lives and damage to faculty buildings. The pilot, instead of ejecting from the plane when he knew it was going to crash, maneuvered the plane and kept it on the (narrow) road away from the buildings and places nearby, where students hang out during the day. Had he ejected from the plane, he would most probably have survived but the crash site was surrounded by buildings in which 300+ people were working/studying at the time, a lot would have been lost. In short, he sacrificed his life to prevent loss of other lives.
It is incidents such as these that force you to think about...well, about everything. And this time it got me thinking about his selfless act. It is only the leader of the Pakistan Army, who had lowered the army in the eyes of the civilian population. Whereas the truth of the matter is that our army, is willing to sacrifice for the country. They stand ever-ready, to defend our homeland from any harm.
It also made me think that It is really not a leader who makes all the difference. This single man had saved 300+ lives. It made me realize that every-day people can also be heroes. They can also do big things. And they can make a difference. If the pilot would have started blaming the engineers and the government for old planes with mechanical faults, there would not have been enough time for him to think and act as he did. We are too lazy and love to put the blame on others.
From now on, I resolve to change my lifestyle to favor growth and prosperity of Pakistan. I resolve to be honest, devoted and respectful and to deliver what I promise. May Allah grant me the strength to do so. Maybe one day I will be a hero and I will make a difference. Until then, I live on in the hope that the day will soon come.
Lastly, I salute the pilot, for his selfless act. May Allah rest his soul in peace. Amen.

The imposition of martial law under the garb of emergency should make it
abundantly clear to everyone that dictators cannot afford even a semblance of either an independent judicial system or a free media. And neither can the assortment of criminals camouflaged as politicians who collaborate with dictators. No one is fooled by Gen. Musharaf's latest deception to hang on to power.
The war on terror has served him well so far and so why change a successful strategy; spread fear in the western capitals by invoking images of bearded men with guns and in the meanwhile brutally crush all dissent within the country, as was recently done by the Burmese Military. Having inducted pliant and amoral judges through the PCO, the next step would be to massively rig the elections while keeping the media muzzled. What he hopes is that he will again have a rubber stamp Assembly, a controlled majority and a friendly opposition, while real power will rest with him for another 5 years. So, what we are witnessing is the first phase of the plan. Massive crackdown
on the genuine opposition, lawyers, human right activists and the civil society. He is hoping that the police brutality will induce enough fear in the people for him to crush all dissent within a couple of weeks, before he takes the next step of getting himself endorsed by his pocket judges. Unfortunately for Musharraf, everyone can see through his latest power grab
attempt. No one believes that the judges were an impediment in his fight against terrorism. He has had absolute power for the last 8 years and yet terrorism and militancy is rising rapidly. What is he going to do that is different? He has had Pakistanis abducted and handed over to the U.S authorities without allowing them their right to prove their innocence in a court of law. Others have simply disappeared. Many tortured. Our own people have been bombed by helicopters and jets and when women and children have been killed, it has been shamefully called "collateral damage". No one to this day knows how many Pakistani (soldiers and civilians) have been killed since 9/11. Most significantly his liberal credentials stand exposed completely,
something he needed to make his dictatorship palatable to the west. Gimmicks like "enlightened moderation", "soft image" and "sufi Islam" stood exposed as the nation saw police boots and sticks shower on peaceful human rights protestors, lawyers and the media. All laws whether it was through PEMRA, PCOs, the 17th amendment or the disgraceful NRO were only to consolidate his power. The time has come for the people of Pakistan to decide their destiny. If
Musharraf succeeds in destroying the independent judiciary through his PCO, then I am afraid it is all down hill. His "pocket" judges will assist him in suppressing the media and in rigging the elections. A Government formed from this unholy alliance will be a disaster for
Pakistan and will ensure that it heads towards becoming a failed state. For a start there will be a quantum leap in terrorism. His policies have
alienated the Pushtuns in general and the tribal Pushtuns in particular. There are around a million armed men in the tribal areas. Does it make any logical sense that to capture a couple of thousand Al-Qaeeda we invoke the hostility of around a million armed men - all natural guerilla fighters? And that is why history tells us the British lost more soldiers in the tribal areas than the whole of the sub-continent during their Raj. Moreover fundamentalism is on the rise in most of Northern Pakistan because
of Musharraf's "enlightened moderate" media policies. There is great reaction amongst the masses who perceive this as a license to be vulgar. The Lal Masjid "warriors" belonged to this category. While in Swat & Dir, there has been a rising discontentment due to the poor governance system ever since the two regions became a part of Pakistan in 1974. Thanks to Musharraff being perceived as an American Stooge imposing an anti-Islamic agenda on the country, all these movements are morphing into one. Another five years of Musharraff will mean that certain discontented
sections of the society will lose faith in the democratic process and will also join the militants; thereby raising the prospects of Pakistan turning into another Algeria - the Army against its own people. The other disaster of Musharraff dictatorship would be a further diversion
of the country's resources away from the people. During his 8 years 1.8% of the GDP was spent on education - the lowest ever in our history and consequently today Pakistan's state school education system has collapsed. According to the U.N Human Development Index Pakistan has the worst social indicators in South Asia. Even Burma is ahead. On the other hand in 2006 Pakistan spent US $ 5.1 billion on arms. A new GHQ is being built on 2500 acres in Islamabad at the cost of billions of dollars. Equally disastrous is the collapse of governance in Pakistan. According to
Transparency International this is the most corrupt Government in our history. Hardly surprising since crooks, criminals and even terrorists (according to the Canadian Supreme Court the MQM is a terrorist organization) are sitting at the helm of affairs. The biggest scams in our history have been during the past 5 years. Rs.55 billion loans to the rich and powerful have been waived off while the common man has been crushed by unprecedented inflation. Hence it is imperative that all sections of Pakistani society stand behind
Chief Justice Iftikhar and demand his restoration along with the other honourable judges. We should not accept the PCO or those judges who have taken oath by it. Only if Justice Iftikhar is restored will we have an independent judiciary,
which is the bedrock of a genuine democratic system. The independent judiciary will protect the media's freedom and ensure free and fair elections that are vital for the country's survival only. Free and fair elections can throw up a Government that can start a political dialogue with the Militants. The war against terrorism can only be won if the people from within whom the terrorists operate, also consider them to be terrorists. If on the other hand they are perceived as heroes or freedom fighters than it is a never ending war - and history tells us that it cannot be won. Moreover, a democratic Government which comes through free and fair elections has to invest in the people. Otherwise no matter how high the growth rate it will lose the elections - as happened to the BJP despite "shining India" Above all only an independent judiciary will stop criminals from entering
politics. At the moment they know that once they are part of the power structure they are safe from the courts. The NRO is a classic case in point which under Musharraff's pocket judges will absolve politicians of their crimes that includes plunder of the country's resources as well as assassinations and target killings. Once a P.M. or President are not above law only then can this country develop a governance system that will make it achieve its great potential. What needs to be done is for all sections of the society - especially the
students whose future is at stake, to demand the restoration of Chief Justice Iftikhar and a total boycott of the PCO judges. Until our demands are accepted we should agitate throughout the country. The APDM should immediately give a call to its workers to join the lawyers and the civil society in the streets. And finally it brings me to Benazir and Maulana Fazal ur Rehman. They are the only two "opposition" leaders who are allowed to freely roam around. The former is even given protocol. Both of them have played a major role in strengthening Musharraff by undermining the opposition at every stage. Both have used the opposition to strengthen their bargaining position with the Government for their personal ends. Most regretfully neither has demanded the restoration of Chief Justice Iftikhar. The APDM should tell them that we have had enough of their "Noora Khushti". If they want to be part of the genuine opposition both must demand the restoration of Chief Justice Iftikhar and announce a street movement immediately. But they should not be allowed to sabotage the opposition movement for their personal gains again. April 16 Deadly Cell Phone CallsIn Lahore, there is a wide-spread rumor these days and it says that a strange call comes to your cell phone and sort of blows up your cell while u try to listen to the call, leaving u *dead* :) ..... Pretty interesting that a huge population of completely educated people ( i say completely educated cuz it includes qualified telecommunications egineers ) actually, really, and *totally* beleives in this rumor and have stopped using their cell phones. It never got worse than that in lahore before :) ... pretty amazing and pretty funny! I say its good in a way cuz in lahore pakistan in general, we have a lot of issues that get discussed eg cricket (we lost really really bad few days back in the worldcup), politics (whats the president upto?), prices getting higher and higher, and lot of similar topics that really gets people angry (including me:) (thats y I just dont read the newspaper). So rumors like this cell phone thing, gives us a lot of good laughs every time this topic is brought up, and every one around u has something new funny to say :). So Aqeel wrote some interesting words about this rumor, enjoy the article:
December 05 Nirala CrimeI am copying below a message that I received from several friends .
Faisal Farooq, owener of Nirala Sweets/Milk was having a good time racing on a busy street. He Hit a car and killed a baby of 6 months and severely injured the parents. Faisal flew away and later threatened the family with a squad of gunmen that if any case is made he will kill the rest of the family. We, on humanitarian grounds request all citizens to: 1. Boycott all Nirala products 2. Organise protest walks in front of Nirala sweet shops 3. Demand that the government moves swiftly to arrest the criminal. 4. Write to press and ask TV / radio to cover the news. Please pass this on. Here is an update of the Nirala crime story given by a freind. "This is an update, after I spoke on telephone, some five minutes ago, to Waseem Sajjad (father of the child killed in the accident) Waseem Sajjad is still under shock and trauma of this accident. He confirmed that all the facts mentioned in the report carried by the NEWS are correct. This report was circulate to you earlier. An FIR has now been registered. The police is dragging its feet. As always, the powerfuls and influentials of this country ( being the chips of the same dirty stone) tend to gang up, and hush up the case. I can suggest that while many citizens should be approaching press and TV, people in Lahore could make a specific issue based committee, and exert pressure on Police to efficiently proceed with the case and meet politicians and government functionaries to ensure that the necesary steps are taken to bring the culprit to justice. Protests and boycott of 'strange' sweets should be widely publicised. " March 16 Blogger Blogs Banned in Pakistanwww.blogger.com blogs are banned in Pakistan. The reason that I heard, and is not confirmed, is some blogs by the address *.blogspot.com had posted Prophet Muhammad's (pbuh) cartoons in their posts so any blogspot addresses cannot be accessed in Pakistan now. I have a blog (http://joehacker.blogspot.com) there too, and have not been able to access it for nearly 2 months. The good thing though is that the site www.blogger.com is accessible, we can log in and maintain our blogs, add new posts etc. I can check the preview but I cant view the final post. I had to email my friend in usa to ask him to check my site if its still available. He can, so now except for my own country and me, every one else can view my blogs. February 17 Riots in LahoreIt’s been fourth consecutive day of riots here in Lahore and it doesn’t seem to be stopping. More and more businesses are getting affected. Many people are not sending their kids to schools. Lots and lots of cars have been burned, among fast foods is KFC and McDonalds and many other whose names I don’t know, Bank Alfalah's one branch was also burned. Citizens are confused about what is happening and why it is happening. These protesting mobs look at what’s looking big, that is any 2 or 3 floor building and if there is no Army or Police there, they will just try to burn it.
The culprits call themselves lovers of Islam, but the truth is that they are just unfortunate uneducated Muslims who are making their fellow Muslim’s lives miserable, and in turn earning Hell for themselves. For an average Pakistani it takes a lot of months (maybe years for some) to save money to buy a motor bike, and those sick protesting people; they just came and burned it, and for no reason. Well they say it’s for the cartoons of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) that were published in the Danish newspaper, but check this: what teachings of Islam ask us to hurt our neighbor when someone in another country says something bad about Islam? Beats me seriously. They are doing it for absolutely no bloody reason. Hearing bikes and cars being burned wasn’t surprising for when I heard that they have burned shops, a little one even of which must be feeding multiple families. This can never happen if you are following Islam. This is just destroying reputation of Islam, and reputation and economy of Pakistan. What will be the world thinking of us right now? It’s just shameful.
And just look at the government, they seem to be doing nothing. They just can’t stop these activities. Are they sleeping or what? Government is just building roads! We need peace first and then other things. We pay taxes everywhere we go in the country. What do we get? While walking on a road you see two guys on a bike come to you shows you a loaded gun and asks you to hand over your wallet, cell phone and everything you have. You go to a shop in a car, when you come out you never see your car again. Security is getting worse. At first these cell phone snatching spread large in Karachi and now it is increasing in Lahore. Recovery is so disappointing that no one now expects it.
I believe it’s easy for government to control all these situations, provided that they DO want to control.
Today, while in office, we went out to eat. Although streets, where I went through, were looking peaceful but people had started closing shops pretty early in the day. The banks and restaurants had closed operations earlier. A friend sent me an email that the software company he works for advised everyone to go home after 12pm today because of the “tense situation in the city”. I read the same message outside Bank Alfalah’s branch in Faisal Town today. We saw Standard Chartered bank had covered its building with white plastic covers to hide their name because when the riot sees anything that they read which sounds western, they just try to burn it. Yea I know that’s completely stupid and unbelievably uneducated! In Gulberg area, we saw Telenor, a Norway’s telecommunication company, had to put a large banner of Kalmah (the basic tenet of Islam) in Arabic language in hopes that their building won’t be burned, and then they had to invite Army to protect them. December 06 Going to The LaunchThe launch of Visual Studio 2005 is finally here in Pakistan. We have a plan to attend it tomorrow at Avari Hotel. Its going to be fun. They'll be giving away a lot of goodies. Participants also will have a chance to win the XBox 360! Thats going to be awesome. Whats more fun is that a LOT of my firends will be comming, most of them which I havnt met for a long time, my netsol buddies, my college buddies etc. Really looking forward to meeting them. I feel we'll be talking to each other more than listening to what the MSFT guys will have to say.
I used visual studio 2k5 beta 2 for about 5 months, 4 of which went in to professional work. Now I'm using the RTM version since 3 weeks. Its fun and really takes the RADness of Visual Studio .net development to the next major level. I heard the next milestone for vs.net will be with Vista OS release. Lets see, its only gonna get better!

He moved me out of that list as I resigned from netsol. Now I have to see how long Fahad himself stays in netsol. I'm giving him 2 months, if he leaves before that time, I'll take him to kfc, other wise he'll take me to kfc :) August 12 Behind the VeilCheck this pdf file. Its about Women wearing Hijab. Its a great feeling to know that many muslim women in west make sure they wear hijab. Noteworthy is the poem:
You look at me and call me oppressed, Simply because of the way I’m dressed, You know me not for what’s inside, You judge the clothing I wear with pride, My body’s not for your eyes to hold, You must speak to my mind, not my feminine mold, I’m an individual, I’m no man’s slave, It’s Allâh’s pleasure that I only crave, I have a voice so I will be heard, For in my heart I carry His Word, “O ye women, wrap close your cloak, So you won’t be bothered by ignorant folk,” Man doesn’t tell me to dress this way, It’s a Law from God that I obey, Oppressed is something I’m truly NOT, For liberation is what I’ve got, It was given to me many years ago, With the right to prosper, the right to grow, I can climb mountains or cross the seas, Expand my mind in all degrees, For Allâh Himself gave us LIB-ER-TY, When He sent Islâm, To You and Me! August 11 Leaving NetSolI resigned from NetSol on 2nd of august 2005 after lunch time! I asked them to release me within 2 weeks, and they did.
It was nice working in NetSol.There were good times and there were bad times. There were good people and there were not-so-good people. I made a lot of friends here. I worked with lots of nice people here, wanted to work with more nice people but cant work with all of them of course. I got into habbit of going out to eat bcuz of netsol friends. Office in Defence was an excellent place. There were lots of places to eat. When I joined NetSol in april 2002, those were bad days of IT industry in Pakistan. We used to recieve good-bye emails every week. Now things are very different. We have shifted to a new building near Airport. They have had a very good last year earnings and have done a lot of hiring. NetSol hired 60 new people in 2 months. Thats a big number for any Pakistani software company.
Yesterday I got my farewell. We are three in my dept who are leaving at the same time.
Lets see what's in store for me on the road ahead. |
